Snow

Ski/board

If you love snow you’re in luck because it dumps down around here!  Beautiful big fluffy snowflakes that float down like feathers.  And just 20 minutes up the road from Nelson is one of the finest powder skiing destinations in the world: Whitewater ski resort.  The facilities are simple: a rustic day lodge with great food and a few lifts, but the snow is oh so sweet.  To many, it is heaven. Cross country skiing on set tracks or make your own at lakeside or on the BNR Railtrail above Nelson, also great for snowshoeing.  Out of Nelson, Red Mountain Resort is less than 1 hour away, or get on the Powder Highway and see them all!

Back country

If you want to escape the lifts and make your own runs, there are plenty of areas nearby for back country touring.  Be prepared and take avalanche training (eg. Peak Freaks), or do guided ski touring (Mountain Sense or Summit Mountain Guides).  Cat skiing or heli-skiing operations are nearby (Baldface, Retallack, Vallhalla Powdercats, Snowater, Selkirk Wilderness Skiing, Wildhorse) if you want easy access to ski fresh lines all day.  Nelson is a winter paradise.

Discounted lift tickets

As a small and intimate accommodation provider The WhiteHouse is not large enough to participate in Whitewater’s discounted lift ticket program, however the savings on discounted lift tickets is often only very small.  Alternatively, Whitewater’s Powder Pass Card can be purchased any time, pays for itself after only 4 days use, and gives you the 1st & 6th days skiing for free!  Yet another reason to stay longer in paradise!
